Growing Herbs in a Small Bed

Of course, we dismantled the small round herb garden that Ken built me at the rental house, and reinstalled it here as a semi-circle in front of the deck. It’s lovely! Nearly all of the herbs survived the winter. We have strawberries (which grew over the winter from six plants to eight!), two large sage plants, chives, and parsley.

I just don’t have a lot of luck with seeds, so I generally buy small plants at the nursery. Last week I bought a thyme that I was able to divide into four clumps for only $1.40!

The sage has grown like a weed, and was falling over from how tall it had gotten. So i bought two tomato cages (77 cents apiece) and stuffed the sage plants inside it. Instantly they began to do much better!

Use the best soil possible – we used about 1/3 dirt, 1/3 purchased topsoil, and 1/3 compost. So far we’ve had excellent results with everything we’ve grown except for the lavender – have never gotten it to grow. I read just yesterday that it prefers a sandy soil, so I’m going to amend the soil it’s in with some sand from the creek and see if that helps… it certainly can’t hurt!
