Obama and Sex Ed

Even watching FoxNews and seeing some of the commentary for myself, I’m still not sure exactly the context of what he said. The clip I just watched showed him making fun of someone who is upset with his stance. He was standing in front of a Planned Parenthood backdrop. I’m paraphrasing what he said (this is BO speaking): “<sarcasm>Barack Obama wants to teach sex ed in kindergarten. I wasn’t sure what to say about that.</sarcasm>….It’s the right thing to do.”

Not sure what he said before/after that. I’d love to know the rest of his speech.

A PR dude told Fox that one of BO’s concerns is protecting young children from pedophilia.

Mitt Romney has, of course, taken great offense and says, “How much sexed does a kindergartener need? ZERO!”

Urgh. I actually agree with Mitt Romney about something.
Geraldo Rivera is on Fox & Friends at the moment, and he said something I agree with wholeheartedly. We don’t need to be teaching kids sex ed. We need to be teaching them good manners! That doesn’t need a sexual context.
Good manners means that you don’t touch people and they don’t touch you…. whether that’s hitting, pinching (anyone remember second grade?) or touching your private parts. I do think that kids should be taught that certain actions on the part of another are inappropriate and that they should always tell a responsible adult…including if what someone else does just makes you feel funny. That doesn’t need sexual context, nor does it need to be hyped or made a big deal out of. It’s just a fact of life.

Kids have to be taught about “the birds and the bees” … of course. THAT should never happen at school. Sex Ed in school is one of the more ridiculous propositions I’ve ever heard of.

And when the parents are unwilling/unable to teach their children about “the birds and bees” is it really any wonder that the schools get selected for the job? Or that when kids get told nothing at all, fool around, and an unplanned pregnancy happens – guess what? Abortion time!

Most of the kids I know who’ve gotten pregnant learned all about sex in school. In fact, at the high school Kayti attended, the highest # of pregnant students came from kids who’d taken that “parenting” class and had to take home the screaming, crying, pooping “baby” doll and learned all about condoms and BC pills and such.

I’d say that the school’s track record of teaching kids much of anything is pretty lousy. Yes, there’s excellent teachers out there who actually work hard and love to teach kids how to learn. But our experience ourselves, growing up in the 70′s/80′s and the experiences of our kids and friends’ kids is that school is a place to learn how to push a pencil and behave like a trained seal – not a place where much of any learning takes place.

You’re right that parents who don’t teach their kids anything is a problem. It’s not one that can be solved by teaching kids, “**** all you want so long as it’s ‘safe’”…
