I think I’ve seen this argument against TB half a dozen times today, including by a rather vicious commenter here on this blog. (I deleted it and emailed him and asked him to re-post the comment without the name-calling. )
The argument runs thusly: Todd Bentley says he was demon-possessed after he came to Christ. Ergo, he’s no minister and no Christian.
I haven’t investigated what Todd REALLY says about it (I will, shortly), but I can attest that I was demonized (possessed? oppressed? opposed? Doesn’t matter what you call it – they were there and needed the boot) for several days after I came to Christ. Don’t tell me I wasn’t yet saved – I know that I was saved better than I know my own name. They were there because, as a witch/bisexual/drug dealer and a few other things equally seedy, I’d invited them in. I had to un-invite them.
I’m not sure what would have happened, had I continued in that state – but the question is moot since God Himself led me in deliverance and I was set free from the demons, sprawled on the restroom floor at Arrowhead Campground, July 31, 2000.
Oh gosh. I just found the video, and I’m seriously about to fall on the floor laughing. The same folks that kvetch about the demons are also hooting and hollering about TB having gone to <gasp> MASS with <gasp> some [charismatic] <choke> Catholics! <gasp choke wheeze> … then he joined a <scream> home group of these charismatic Catholic folks, and the audible voice of the Lord told him that he had a demon and should seek deliverance. Deliverance came and was dramatic. His story sounds so much like my own, it’s uncanny…
Here’s a clip (posted by, ironically, someone who calls herself saur-kraut… so saur that I won’t be linking to her blog.)
