OK, so I never thought of New Jersey as a place to take a vacation of any sort – let alone a family beach vacation. So I guess I only have ever seen the highway through the smelly parts of Jersey, and never equated that with places like “The Jersey Shore”.

I came across a link to New Jersey water parks, and discovered a place called Morey’s Piers and Beachfront Waterparks.

Ken and I have been watching this program – I think on History Channel – that features roller coasters and extreme rides – including water parks. We decided that the 10,000 foot straight down slides probably weren’t for us (hmmm. weight+gravity=not so sure about that!) but some of the other rides looked like lots of fun. So now we’re keen to go to a water park for a day – maybe this fall when it’s not so hot.

And it wouldn’t be too hot as far north as New Jersey, I guess!

Moreys has Magical Mondays and other specials throughout the week – and there’s apparently two parks to choose from with awesome looking slides and rides. For families they offer kids camp and such. THEY EVEN HAVE WIRELESS INTERNET — I guess if you can’t get away from the computer for a whole day and splash and play, you need to get a life!!

Well, if we’re ever up that way we’ll definitely stop in! Anyone have experience with either of these parks??

I’ve been researching car rental companies because the last one we used really let me down. Ran across this one – has anyone ever used them?

A company called Advantage has car rental services. Their prices seem competitive – one nice-looking car was going for $20.99/day, which is a little less than we paid last time we rented a car. Plus they’ve got some GREAT discounts and specials – You can get up to a 50% discount on Luxury and Convertible car rentals, and even rent a car for $1 a day (it’s location and destination dependent, but if you’re going that way, hey…)

Unfortunately, they don’t have a NC location yet – but we’re planning another trip to Florida and they’ve got convenient locations there. We want to fly down and rent a car, so that would work out well.

And get this (now I’m getting excited!) they’ve got locations at both Montego Bay and Kingston airports (Jamaica).. if we get to where we’re comfortable driving on the left, we’ll DEFINITELY rent from these folks!

We woke up yesterday, got it together, and took off to Morrow Mountain down in the Uwharries (pronounced you-war-ries, sort of, but with a Southern drawl). We’d never been there before.

The Uwharries aren’t really mountains in the mountainous sense… they’re just big, big hills… with multitudes of rivers and lakes and streams all around. Morrow Mountain is surrounded by 3 rivers coming together and a big lake formed by two hydro dams. It’s beautiful.

We got some great pics, then we hiked a little, then spent the rest of the afternoon in the swimming pool. Got a GREAT tan. Stopped on the way home at Cripple Creek, by Lake Tillery, and ate a wonderful dinner and befriended the general manager of the place. If you have opportunity to eat there, DO IT, and tell Carol we said hello!

Then we came home and went CRASH! for a wonderful night’s sleep. I’ll write up a fuller account of it later… and post my pics!

New York, New York… one of my favorite places. Being a country girl most of my life, my visits to the Big Apple have been filled with a sense of wonder. As soon as you get to NYC the sights, smells, and sounds of well over nine million people invade the senses. And yet it’s fun!

I travelled to New York City a few years ago and visited several dear friends. We stayed on Long Island, and took the Long Island Expressway into the city. It was my first-ever train and subway experience.

They took me to see many of the sights. I remember walking down the street with big buildings looming overhead. Look up! The sky is falling! I really enjoyed seeing Times Square and the Statue of Liberty.

One of the best things about New York is, of course, the food!! You can get food from any nation of the world, any style! One of my favorite places to eat is Khyber Pass on St. Marks Place and 5th Ave in Manhattan. THE BEST FOOD EVER! The owner is a friend of my old boss, Jahan. You can also get dessert any time of day and night, and there are restaurants that specifically cater to chocolate-lovers. We went out at about 1am and got the most decadent chocolate concoction I’ve ever ever ever had.

I would love to take Ken to New York City. He’s never been and would love it. He’s real big on history and New York’s got a lot of it. I’m hoping we’ll be able to go early next year… once it’s warm enough to not snow, but not in the heat of summer yet.

When we go, I’m thinking about using a tour service because I don’t know my way around and the two friends that took me last time are gone (one passed away and the other has moved). I’d hate to get lost on the subway! So for all of the things to do in New York I’m considering an outfit called “Trusted Tours & Attractions”. They offer discount tickets in major cities to things like the Metropolitan museum of art.

They offer escorted tours to a variety of cities… Atlanta, Boston, Vegas, Orlando, and many others (presently 23 cities!)

They’ve got a newsletter and online travel guides for all the cities and promotions. In fact, be sure to sign up for the Trusted Travels eNewsletter and enter to win a handheld GPS… Offer ends June 30th, 2008.

Ken and I are going to Jamaica for a week!! We’re going on a missions trip with 4-5 others, led by Bob Loflin (who has been to Jamaica before).

We’re going to encourage the saints, support the pastors, and lead some folks to Jesus. :D   This is our plan: “Heal the sick, cleanse the lepers, raise the dead, cast out demons. Freely you have received, freely give.”

Pastor Jack is putting together an itinerary for us, arranging for accommodations, a vehicle rental, and so on. We’ll be leaving on or about April 1 and returning the following week.

Ken and I have both been on missions trips before, but have never been able to go together. I went to Panama in 2001, and he went to Siberia in 2004 (I think it was 04!). We’ve never been to Jamaica before but I’m thinking that it will be somewhat like Panama, temperature-wise.

We’re wanting to put together a team of people who will pray for us daily, both in preparation and while we’re gone. If you’d like to be on this team, please email me!

We also need to raise funds quickly (we’re going in just six weeks!).  We’re estimating a total cost of $2000 for the two of us, which will cover the plane tickets, food, car rental, gas, exit fees, etc.  Please pray that we’re able to raise this money, and if you are able to contribute, please let me know! Anything you donate will be tax-deductible.

If you’ve been to Jamaica before – on a missions trip or even as a tourist – I’d love to hear about your experience, what we should bring, what we should leave home, any concerns that are perhaps not mentioned on the Dept. of State and CDC websites. (For example, the CDC is recommending chloroquinine for all travellers to Jamaica; but several (current) websites say that malaria is only a problem in a few small locations, mostly near Kingston. Since we’re not going near there, should we bother to get the drugs? We do plan on coating ourselves with DEET and taking general mosquito precautions.

There’s a temptation within me to start packing TODAY… :D
